" I bought Speedway Promoter about a month ago, what a very addictive and very good sports management game it is. I'm very impressed. Being a speedway supporter from way back in the 60's, and not being in a position to go to any matches these days, I find this game kinda keeps me in touch with the sport.
Thanks very much for hours of nail biting frustration and, finally, jubilation as I reach the Elite League.
I think you should put a health warning on it though,
' This program may cause a severe lack of sleep!' "

So You Want To Run A Speedway Team ......?

A Review by Terry Goodchild

The Background

There used to be a saying in soccer that all goalkeepers must be mad. In my case it was merely being mad about games - any and all, but sports related games especially. But if goalkeepers are an upright or two short of a full goalmouth then heaven help the poor speedway promoter who year after year ploughs a sizeable part of his personal fortune into keeping the local speedway track open.

And the thousand or so faithful fans happy enough to make their weekly pilgrimage to stand on the windswept terraces in the persistent drizzle of a typical English summer evening, munching on their undercooked hotdogs, and dripping onions and ketchup over their clipboard scoresheets.

But the fans' lot is indeed a happy one compared to that of the promoter! Not for them the hassle of putting together a team of riders to conform to the ever changing Speedway Board's regulations, trying to persuade foreign stars to commute twice a week from Denmark and Sweden, and forever balancing on the tightrope that produces a successful team good enough to win the meagre rewards of League or Cup.

But not too good to make home race night an evening of professional racing which will guarantee an even smaller crowd next week!

Now all this can be yours by buying GDW Software's excellent Speedway Promoter for the PC.

The Game

Speedway Promoter invites you (one or two players) to form your own new speedway team and provides you with available funds dependent on the degree of difficulty you select. You also get a home track, and a place in the Premier League which (oddly) is speedway's second division. The Elite League is the top division. But you get no riders!

From here on everything is down to you in terms of putting together a team, attempting to sign (buy or loan) riders currently with Elite or Premier League teams, unattached riders, and foreign riders or even persuading retired riders to put on their leathers again.

Prices are not negotiable and are based on the rider's age and Green Sheet Average. Younger riders may improve over the season, and over subsequent seasons - you can play on and on, and probably will! - and foreign riders cost you money whether they sign or not. And you also have to foot their travelling expenses bill.

You can sign up to twelve riders if you're lucky but you must keep within the league's Points Limit Maximum, which can be anything from 43 to 50 points, set up by you at the outset. You can also set the match formula, 13, 15 or 16 heats.

Then the fun starts!

The tapes fly up with both Elite and Premier matches being run at the push of a button, providing complete scoresheets and heat-by-heat scores. For matches involving your own team the match is run one heat at a time with tactical decisions to be made and on-form reserves to be brought in.

Riders can fall and/or be excluded, suffer engine failure, all the usual stuff, and get themselves injured, and between-match updates keep you abreast of transfer and injury news, retirements, etc, etc.

Apart from keeping your eye on finances, league position, knockout cup progress, the transfer market, and sudden availability of that special rider you've been seeking, the great news for replay gamers is the vast amount of statistical info about the season built into the program. Team averages, league averages, bonus points, overall points, maximums scored, team form, biggest home and away wins for every club, attendance figures - the list goes on and on........

Summary

In a final few words this game is beautifully presented, very user friendly, and very addictive. And for everyone with the slightest interest in the sport it's a 'must-buy'.

Perhaps you need to be a little mad to want to run a speedway team - you're certainly a whole lot crazier to pass this gem of a management sim by!
